Greetings! I am revising this site and it will return, refreshed, in early April.
This Wisconsin Book Festival takes place next month, November 7-11. I will be presenting with Andrea Thalasinos from the Madison Museum of Contemporary Art at 12:15 on Saturday, November 10. This Festival is a great tribute to books and authors and I’m really excited to be able to participate.
Please join me at the Old Friends Celebration on Sunday, October 7. We’ll be celebrating the writers of the Thoroughbred TImes, and I’ll be signing books with James Nicholson and Milt Toby. And the horses will be there to greet you!
Please join me on Friday, August 3rd for a book signing at Saratoga’s National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. You can stop by during your visit to this great museum and its very moving Hall of Fame and still have time to make the Honorable Miss Handicap on Friday afternoon.
Bern Identity with Rosie Naprovnik aboard, and covered with mud, won the Grade II, 300,000 Sanford Stakes at Saratoga on Sunday. We have our first 2-yr. old contender!
Here’s a link to Secretariat winning the 1972 Sanford Stakes. Listen to jockey of second place Linda’s Chief: “He just ran away from me like I wasn’t even there.”
Rick Dutrow is the poster child for industry critics who have been calling for substantial penalties for violations of drug rules. While it’s good news that the revocation of his license has been upheld by the court’s he’s one person, he is not the only transgressor. Sunrise workouts. Equine athletes. Everyone raring to go for tomorrow’s opening day at Saratoga’s legendary, historic racetrack. Thank you to Skip Dickstein of the Times Union for these evocative and romantic photos.
If you’re in town for the races, I’ll be signing books from 10 – 1 at the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame. I’d love to see you at the signing, and please make the time to visit this great museum. The Hall of Fame is an especially moving tribute to these great horses and their connections.
Check under the Readings and Appearances link for additions to the schedule. I’m a guest on Milwaukee Public Television’s, I Remember, on Monday, June 25 at 6:30 pm.
Other upcoming appearances include the Horse Cave, Kentucky Bookfest on June 30. The National Museum of Racing in Saratoga Springs in August, Lexington, KY in October, and the Wisconsin Book Festival in November.
The Kentucky Racing Commission has finally reached some consensus about the use of Lasix and has moved to ban the use of the drug on race day. And in other good news today, the Jockey Club has announced that their going to put their injury database to good use by developing a system of notification for horses at risk.
